The Story

Replacing the armor of infallibility with authentic leadership

Carl Shawn Watkins, BA, MPA, is a leadership consultant, attorney coach, and founder of Carl Shawn Watkins Consulting™ and Courage2Connect Coaching™. Known as “Mr. Vulnerability,” he helps attorneys, managing partners, and law firm leaders replace the “armor of infallibility” with authentic, emotionally intelligent leadership that builds trust, equity, and high-performing teams.

Born and raised in Chicago’s inner city, Carl Shawn overcame significant adversity to become a transformative voice in legal leadership. With a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Rowan University and ongoing graduate studies (MPA candidate; JD aspirant in Civil Rights / Administrative Law), he blends lived experience, leadership theory, and practical frameworks to guide legal professionals through culture change, resilience, and executive presence.

Over the past 25+ years, he has trained more than 1,000 leaders and coached 200+ senior executives across public and private sectors. His work centers on the intersection of vulnerability, DEI, and legal practice — helping firms move from transactional, siloed cultures to collaborative, trust-based environments that retain top talent and improve client outcomes.

On Stage

A transformative voice for legal leadership

From keynote stages to firm workshops, Carl brings the same message: the strongest leaders lead from courage and connection, not armor. He works with firms and legal departments to build cultures where people trust each other, communicate honestly, and perform at their best.

Every engagement blends lived experience with practical frameworks — giving legal leaders tools they can use the moment they walk back into the room.

Philosophy

How I think about leadership

Vulnerability is strength

Trading the armor of infallibility for honesty is what builds trust and high-performing teams.

Context is everything

Leading in law is unlike leading anywhere else. Generic coaching doesn’t translate.

Growth is personal

Real change happens one leader at a time, in honest, confidential work.

Let’s talk about your leadership.
